In celebration of National Ride to Work Day, The Hub Foundation is encouraging local residents to ride to work and enjoy a free breakfast on Wednesday 12 October. The event will take place from 7.30-9.30am at The Hub Plot in Templeton Street, Castlemaine.
As part of the celebrations, everyone is invited to join the community bike ride at 8.00am starting at The Hub Plot, going south down Barker Street to Forest Street and returning to The Hub Plot.
“Cycling just 5km each way to work instead of driving saves well over half a tonne of greenhouse gas emissions each year”, says Jo Kaptein, Project Officer at The Hub Foundation.
“Given that each person in Australia generates around 17 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, that’s a significant contribution to reducing your carbon footprint.”
Jo said riding to work is also good for your hip pocket, “An average Australian household spends around $8,000 each year on transport, of which $2,500 on average is for fuel. By cycling instead of driving, it is possible to save around $50 a week through a reduction in parking, fuel and vehicle maintenance costs…not to mention your gym costs!”
The first 100 cyclists to arrive will enjoy a free breakfast using locally sourced produce prepared by The Growing Abundance Project. Everyone is welcome.
There will be entertainment provided by the Castlemaine Circus and MC Jan Wositzky, prizes for best decorated bike and a vintage bike display.
The Hub Foundation Castlemaine is hosting the event with the support of the Mount Alexander Sustainability Group and Mount Alexander Shire Council.
