Local sustainability groups, the homeless and the Climate Council will share the $10,200 profits raised from the Tim Flannery evening held in Castlemaine in September.
Mt Alexander Sustainability Group (MASG), The Growing Abundance Project, 350.org Castlemaine and the Hub Foundation will have $7,000 between them; the Climate Council will receive $2,000. In addition, $1,200 will go towards putting more solar panels on homes lived in by people who were previously homeless in our shire.
“Having this much profit to distribute is an amazing result. A big thank you to all the volunteers, local businesses, sponsors and community groups, as well as Mount Alexander Shire Council, who made this possible – and of course the ticket buyers,” said Kaptein. “It just shows how engaged our community is with the debate on climate change.”
Flannery, Chief Counciillor of the Climate Council:
It was such a pleasure … to spend a little time in the Castlemaine community. You have achieved something extraordinary in your area, and I came away refreshed and inspired. The dinner was such a celebration – unusual as I travel to talk about climate change. I just can’t thank you enough, both for all you do and your donation to the council.
Local groups said:
MASG are grateful to the Hub Foundation for supporting our contribution to Flannery event which was a highlight on the calendar for our members and volunteers. MASG were honoured to work in partnership with the Hub Foundation, and where there was no financial motivation, the funds received will be used to better support our volunteers through reviving our database, the provision of volunteer training programs and equipment. – Mick Lewin, Chair, Mount Alexander Sustainability Group
We will use the generous donation to support our 2015/16 Harvest program and to support our ongoing work providing Mount Alexander Shire Primary and Secondary school canteens with healthy, local food. – Janet Pullar, The Growing Abundance Project
We will use the money to promote the divestment campaign, This campaign raises awareness that if we bank with the Big 4 banks, buy electricity from the dirty 3 electricity retailers or invest in many super funds, our money is helping fund the expansion of fossil fuels, just at the moment when we need to transition to renewables. The challenge is to put our money where our mouth is! – Bernard Tonkin, 350.org Castlemaine
