Interest in ‘going solar’ has sky-rocketed since the Victorian State Government announced a new solar panels rebate on 19 August. Worth up to $2,225, the rebate has cut the cost of going solar, bringing it within the financial reach of many more homeowners. For example, a typical 4kW solar system now costs around $3,400 through the MASH community solar bulk-buy.
“It was like an early Christmas present”, said Terry Murphy, a Campbells Creek resident who had a MASH 4kW solar system installed on the 3rd of September. “I didn’t know about this rebate until Jo Kaptein from MASH called me to let me know the good news. I was rapt!”
Claiming the rebate
Solar Victoria, the independent body set up to administer this rebate, is now accepting applications. Go to www.solar.vic.gov.au to find out how to apply for the Victorian State Government’s Solar Panels Rebate worth up to $2225 for eligible households. Alternatively call Solar Victoria on 1300 363 744.
Eligibility criteria widened
The rebate will be available to Victorians with a household income of up to $180,000 who don’t currently have a solar panels system and live in their own home valued at up to $3 million – this means almost nine out of 10 Victorians who own their own house are eligible.
The State Government has just widened the eligibility criteria to include two new groups: (1) households who had solar installed before the commencement of the Premium Feed-In Tariff on November 1, 2009 who now want to increase the size of their system and (2) not-for-profit community housing providers who can apply for a rebate on behalf of their tenants.
